New Years Day in Santa Barbara

Now is the time to make those important resolutions for 2012.  Not all resolutions need to be items like quitting smoking or losing weight.  Here are a few ideas on what the locals do:  How about learing to fly — Santa Barbara has one of the best locations on the West Coast to learn how to Paraglide.  Lessons are taught at Elings Park daily and ANYONE can do it.  My wife and I enjoyed our lessons and you will too.  This New Year’s Day (January 1, 2012), weather permitting, both hang gliders and paragliders alike take to the sky to enjoy a fly-in at Elings Park.  Scheduled to take flight shortly before noon, dozens of pilots will take off from La Cumbre Peak in the mountains above Santa Barbara, gain altitude and glide to what locals call “Hang Glider Hill” at the corner of Cliff Drive and Los Positas Road.  The Elings Park area is a great bike riding, hiking, walking, dog friendly park that overlooks the ocean.  Why not come out and enjoy the warm day, paragliders and a beautiful sunset.

Looking for a more active change to your life? How about starting the New Year off with a fun run at the beach.  The Santa Barbara Athletic Association offers what they call the “Resolution Run” (find out more at active.com) Registration starts at 8:00 am.  They offer a 10K run or a less serious 5K run-walk.  Starting at Leadbetter Beach, runners travel along the scenic bike paths of the Santa Barbara coastline.  What a great way to start the new year off on the right foot!

Christmas in Santa Barbara

Christmas is a great time to be in Santa Barbara.  Downtown State Street will be a buzz with last minute shoppers, Christmas carolers strolling the mall and the storefronts dressed in full holiday cheer.  Popular things to do or see while visiting Santa Barbara would include the Nutcracker Ballet, visit the festive nativity scene at the Santa Barbara Mission,  take a walk along the beach, dine or enjoy a drink at the best decorated restaurant- Chase Bar and Grill or visit the clock tower of the courthouse and enjoy the incredible city and ocean views.

Santa Barbara Christmas Parade Of Lights

Don’t miss the Santa Barbara Parade of lights This Sunday December 11th 2011. The Christmas Boat parade leaves the Santa Barbara Harbor at 5:30 and travels down to the East Beach Grill then floats back along the beach for all to see.  The best place to view the decorated boat parade is from Stearns Wharf where they will be playing holiday music and announcing all the boats as they travel by.  At the end of the pier will be Santa’s Village including Santa and 10 tons of SNOW! Dress warm and bring some hot coco to enjoy. Immediately following the parade is a holiday fireworks display over the harbor.  Truly a great Santa Barbara family destination.
