4th of July in Santa Barbara

4th of July at Santa Barbara

4th of July at Santa Barbara

It’s time once again for Santa Barbara to don its red, white and blue colors and celebrate Independence Day in style.  This year’s festivities promise to be a good time for young and old alike, and include a pancake breakfast, Spirit of 76 parade, arts and crafts show along Cabrillo Boulevard, Fourth of July concert at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens and a spectacular fireworks display that will launch off West Beach.

Start the day with a hearty breakfast at the Montecito Firemen’s Association pancake breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, coffee, and milk will be served by your local firefighters from 7:30 am to 10:30 am at the Fire District Headquarters located at 595 San Ysidro Road in Montecito. Tickets are $8 each and can be purchased at the door.  Proceeds will benefit the Montecito Firefighter’s Benevolent Fund.

Next up is the Fourth of July parade which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Micheltorena Street and will proceed down State Street to Old Town Santa Barbara, concluding at Cota Street. If you don’t wish to secure a spot to watch the parade ahead of time along the route and hate fighting crowds, the organizers offer reserved seating. (link: http://spiritof76sb.org/donations.php)

A free concert will take place at the Sunken Garden of the historic and picturesque Santa Barbara Courthouse.  Admission is free and the music is set to start at 4:30pm.  Bring a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy a musical salute to American patriotism by the West Coast Symphony Orchestra.

After the concert, be sure to head down to West Beach for the fireworks display. Plan to get there early and enjoy the musical entertainment on the beach while securing the best “seat in the sand” from which to watch the fireworks.  The fireworks display is scheduled to start at 9pm and West Beach will be open for free public viewing.

And don’t miss the best parade of all, the post-firework walk up State Street. If you watched the fireworks on the beach, you’ll likely be walking back up State Street afterward to get to the remote place you had to park your car. Walking under the Highway 101 underpass in a huge crowd of people is quite a memorable experience in itself. 4th July fireworks

Santa Barbara Weather

Santa Barbara HarborToday’s weather forecast for Santa Barbara is another beautiful day in paradise. Tomorrow’s forecast is calling for yet another perfect day in Santa Barbara.

Is it really fair to the rest of the country suffering from sub-zero temperatures that we should be wearing shorts on the beach  in January?  Well, this is why we have all migrated to the Santa Barbara area – to spend our golden years in the warm California sun.  If you ever wonder what drives the price of homes, you better believe our weather is one of the main driving forces.

If you are new to the area or planning a vacation to southern California, take a look at this graph for the best months to visit for weather.

Some other Santa Barbara weather facts are:

– On average the warmest month to visit is August.

– On average the coolest month is December.

– The highest recorded temperature was 109 degrees in 1985.

– The lowest recorded temperature was 20 degrees in 1990.

– February is on average the wettest month.

Be sure to call your “out of state” friends and family and let them know that you are strolling on the beach under sunny skies and 82 degree temps.  There is no better reminder of why you call one of the best cities in the world in which to live home.

Santa Barbara Zoo Welcomes Newborn Baby Giraffe

Newborn Baby

Newborn Baby

Santa Barbara zoo welcomes baby giraffe

On April 18 at 3:52, after a mere 12.5 months of pregnancy, two hours of labor, mother giraffe Audrey welcomed her newborn son “Dane” into the world. Weighing in at 156 pounds and standing 6′ 3″, Baby Dane is expected to double his height and weight in the next year. If you would like to see the baby giraffe at the Santa Barbara Zoo he is now on display in a nursery pen within the main exhibit.

If you have the opportunity to visit the zoo in the next week you may be lucky enough to personally witness the birth of another Giraffe. Mother Betty Lou is also pregnant and overdue to give birth.

During pregnancy a female Giraffe will only gain about 100 pounds. This is natures way of protecting the pregnant mother from drawing attention or vulnerability to predators.

The Santa Barbara zoo hours of operation are 10:00 to 5:00 daily. Please check the Santa Barbara zoo’s website; sbzoo.org for special holiday hours. The zoo is located near East Beach near the bird refuge at 500 Ninos Drive.

Summer Solstice Parade in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Summer Time Fun!

Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade 2012

It’s that time of year again!  Time to celebrate the longest day of the year at Santa Barbara’s annual Summer Solstice Parade!  On Saturday, June 23rd Santa Barbara will once again host the largest single-day event in the county, attracting crowds of 100,000 or more.

This year’s parade has “Fantasy” as its theme and will feature Fantasy-inspired extravagant floats, whimsical costumes and creatively choreographed dancing ensembles.

Santa Barbara’s Summer Solstice Celebration has been deemed a combination of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras, Rio’s Carnival, with a touch of Pasadena’s Doo Dah Parade thrown in for good measure.  The unique people powered parade commences at noon on the Saturday closest to the longest day of the year.  The nearly two hour long parade starts at Cota Street and winds its way up State Street, finishing at Alameda Park shortly after 1pm – with the fun just beginning!  Bands are scheduled to play throughout the day into the evening hours, and again on Sunday.

If you are new to the area, this is one Santa Barbara celebration that you will not want to miss. The Solstice parade is second only to the Santa Barbara Fiesta parade in size and will be a memorable part of your visit to the area.

Organic Farmers Market In Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara farmers Market Jams and Jellies

Santa Barbara is know for it’s great Mediterranean climate and perhaps there is no better example found than at the all Organic Farmers Market.  As many parts of the world are shoveling out of the snow, Santa Barbara farmers embraace the ability to grow great crops year around. Known as one of the top 10 “healthiest cities” in the country, Santa Barbara offers locals an incredible ability to exercise plenty and eat well. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, walking, diving, boating, fishing, golfing or even lawn bowling, Santa Barbara has it all and has it right in town.  Even if you are the type of person who rather go to a restaurant then cook gourmet at home you will see many of the local Chef’s shopping for their restaurants at the farmers market.  The Farmers Market is held weekly in different locations for the convenience of the locals.

Here is the schedule for the Farmers Market:

Winter in Santa Barbara offers year around fresh organic vegetable

Organic Vegetables at the Farmers Market on Tuesday-the Farmers Market is held in Old Town Santa Barbara where they close down two blocks of lower State Street and run the market from 4:00 - 7:30. (this is my personal favorite)

Thursday-the Farmers Market is in Carpinteria from 3:00 – 6:30 and is held off linden Street downtown.

Friday-is Montecito’s turn to host the Farmers Market and they do so on Coast Village Road between the hours of 8:00 –  11:30.

Saturday-is one of the largest Farmers Markets and it is held in downtown Santa Barbara between 8:30 – 1:00 in a parking lot at the corner of Santa Barbara Street and Cota.

Sunday-the Market makes it’s way up to the Camino Real Market Place next to Home Depot, Costco and Best Buy in Goleta and is held from 10:00 – 2:00.
